Gold Dog Tags
Gold dog tags have been popularized into fashion through the military chic style. Military chic also made famous khaki clothing, camouflage print and cargo pants. Gold dog tags were originally worn by teenagers who adopted a militaristic image to look tough. In time, celebrities such as movie stars, rock stars, athletes, and heiresses started wearing them too. The tags can be personalized by engraving the wearer's personal details, beliefs, tastes, feelings for a loved one, favorite quote or motto, and even the name and logo of their favorite artist.
The military is associated with dog tags which they are required to wear for identification. The tags itemize the wearer's last name, first name, social security number (formerly called service number), blood type and religion. These personal details are stamped on oval metal pieces, held by a metal chain and worn around the neck. The size and shape are standardized across the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy. The U.S. Army was the foremost department to mandate that identification tags be worn starting December 20, 1906 with Department General Order No. 204. The U.S. Navy and Air Force followed suit thereafter.

Obviously, gold dog tags got their name from the tags that dogs and other pets had around their necks to help people identify the owners when the pets got lost. The tags were initially stamped silver or gold metal that were round or oval. The number of characters that could be stamped were limited to the fixed size that was imposed by the machines that made them. The stamped letters were boxy and uneven.
Except for the official military dog tags that have a uniform prescribed style and content, fashionable tags worn by humans and pets alike are now available in a dizzying array of choices. New materials like plastic, colored metal alloys and silicone are being used in addition to gold dog tags. Stamping has been rendered obsolete by lasers and machines that engrave the data. As a result, you can choose from a wide palette of colours -- from green, purple, orange or red to holographic silver or gunmetal gray. The letters can even be engraved in frosty white to serve as an eye catching contrast to a different-colored tag.
A myriad of shapes are possible due to the new techniques. For animals, their owners can opt for paw prints, faces of their dog or cat, dog houses or hearts to which the details of their precious pet are etched. Teens who want to wear it to express their individuality can go for shapes that are of a skull and crossbones, stars, dog bones, t-shirts, suitcases and even the Liberty Bell. Modern technology has enabled more choices.
